Practical Magic
I’m writing this on the New Moon, after placing my favorite chunks of citrine (for abundance), rose quartz (for love) and amethyst (for healing) out in the eastern most corner of my lanai to soak up the new moon rays. The East brings in new energy and new ideas. That’s what I am trying to attract these days. I lit my candles, and wrote my abundance check which will be burned two weeks from now, when the moon is full.
I’ll admit, my rituals are 100% self invented, made up by me. Intuitive spirituality that I’ve cobbled together, borrowed from various circles, ceremonies, and some Catholic things from my upbringing thrown there for good measure.
I grew up in a religious home, went to parochial school and Mass every week. I loved church, the smells, the ritual, the connection to something bigger than myself. I made all my sacraments up through confirmation at age 13. But, as an adult, I have had to reconfigure my spirituality. I don't connect to Catholicism as an adult but I appreciate many aspects of it. I’ve made it personal and my own.
Twice a month, when I lay out my “rocks” in the moonlight, my boyfriend looks at them with amusement and curiosity. He’s a QUESTIONER and he wants me to explain it with logic and reason. It used to be a sticking point in our relationship. But then I caught him talking softly to the plants he tends to in our garden and now all bets are off. Secretly, I know he understands my configuration of rocks and candles. And he has his own quietly cobbled together spirituality.
Magic is something I practice everyday. I begin each morning with a round of EFT tapping to clear any anxiety and set my intentions for the day. Next up, an audio recording of gratitude which I exchange with a friend. This Magical Morning Practice which I learned in Gala Darling’s epic program The Vortex, grounds me and sets me up for success in my day. Then I pull a tarot card.
Throughout my day, I make time to connect with nature. I take a long walk most days after work and I listen to an audio book or a podcast, usually a spiritually centered one. At the end of my day, a soak in the hot tub, followed by another round of tapping and an evening bookend of gratitude exchanged with another friend
These rituals center my day and have transformed my life. They help me connect with myself, my desires, my dreams and with other people.
These rituals release me from resentments, lift my fears and ease self doubt. These practices bring me joy and show me beauty, even when I'm struggling.
As a child I called it God, Church and prayer. Today I call it god/goddess/higher power, circle and ritual. But the love, comfort and feelings are the same.
