Might as well face it you’re addicted to Like

Social media makes me grouchy. Even though I’m completely addicted to it.

It’s a narcissistic society. A culture of SELF. I came of age in a time before “status” updates, “selfies” YouTube stars and Reality TV.

I grew up in the 70’s where my mother would flat out say “Kathleen, you’re 13 years old and live on Staten Island next to a garbage dump. Nobody cares what you think”

As harsh as that sounds to the 2022 brain, at least I had a realistic view of my place in the world. I knew my voice was just one voice.

Back in the day, we had a debate club where you actually had to sit there and tolerate an opposing opinion, and you couldn’t just jump on TikTok and rant your response.

We had a phone. At home. Attached to the wall.  And when you tried to call someone, sometimes, no one answered. Sometimes, you got an answering machine. And sometimes you go a BUSY SIGNAL. A busy signal !

Yep. I’m officially a middle aged lady nostalgic for simpler times.

We’ve become Pavlov’s dogs salivating for “likes” “shares” and attention. From strangers.

Has anyone liked this post yet ? Anyone ???????

It’s not that I don’t see any value in social media. Some people ARE really savvy, well informed and use the internet to give voice to serious problems in the world. Twenty five years ago, we didn’t have a place to talk about bullying, racism, discrimination. At least not in a way that you could reach so many people so quickly. So it’s cool that there are internet activists reaching people who would otherwise be isolated.

And it’s cool too that you can look online and learn how to do anything from tile your floor, to do full face showgirl makeup.

The problem is, you have to sift through all the people who are ranting, complaining, talking about nothing or just seeking attention.

And it can be totally overwhelming.

This year, I started editing who I follow and the content I consume on social media. And it’s done a lot of good for my mental health.

I also set a timer on my phone for 20 minutes, so I don't have too much time to go down a scrolling rabbit hole that feeds into the worst parts of my personality.

My mental health is so much better when I connect with people in person, or take time for a long walk, or read a book, or listen to a podcast.

With just a tiny sprinkle of Instagram.
